Laguna Plein Air Painters Association was founded in 1996 by Saim Caglayan with the united efforts of Ken Auster, Jacobus Baas, Cynthia Britain and John Cosby. Primary motivation for the formation of LPAPA was to link the strong plein air movement of the early California painters to the present ones and to create a bond amongst the contemporary plein air painters throughout the nation.
LPAPA is dedicated to maintaining this bond through its newsletter, monthly paint outs, workshops, artist and signature member exhibitions, and fundraisers to help promote open spaces. The annual plein air painting invitational, which gathers some of the best landscape painters in the nation to picturesque Laguna Beach is our fundraiser to benefit the Laguna Art Museum and Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.
Laguna Art Museum was established in 1918 from the Laguna Beach Art Association founded by Edgar Payne. Over the years the museum strayed away from the original intent of its founders and embraced modernist and contemporary movements. In 1999, the Museum Director Bolton Colburn and LPAPA board of directors acknowledged the need for reconnecting museums past to the present and created the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational. It was a step in the right direction, as the overwhelming response of the art community and the enthusiasm of the museum board has made this an annual event. Our mission is to continue with our efforts to establish a strong foothold for plein air painting in the contemporary world of art.
