2019 Laguna Plein Air Invitational Artist Jim McVicker
“I find plein air painting stimulating, challenging and a process that involves all the senses. One needs to be very alert, spontaneous and open to the ever changing scene.”

“I am awestruck by the beauty and diversity of the Northwest. I see the fingerprints of a creative God all around me — from the last glow of golden light on a mountain to the sparkle of a meandering meadow stream. This inspires me to try to capture an essence of a scene or moment in time, and share that with others.“

“I like to think that I chose to work in watercolor but in many ways watercolor chose me. We have an agreement, it goes where it wants with little direction from me. Watercolor is not a medium that is “pushed” around. Instead you have to adapt and abandon rigidity as it flows and runs across the paper creating hypnotic washes. I strive to bring a sense of space and atmosphere, with a cinematic elegance and quiet sophistication to my work. Creating a poetic narrative, each piece telling a unique story.”

2019 Laguna Plein Air Invitational Artist Jane Hunt
“Even though I paint a lot of studies on location, my landscapes are actually less about describing a specific place than they are about the feelings evoked. With an impressionistic, tonal approach, I hope to convey the emotional connection that I had with each scene. Moving cross-Atlantic three times in my early years, I spent much of my life with an underlying sense of homesickness. This yearning propelled me to create a sense of ‘home’ within my landscapes. My greatest hope is that my work gives its viewers this same sense of comfort and connectedness; a gentle place to rest.”

2019 Laguna Plein Air Invitational Artist Dan Graziano
“In my paintings, I try to capture the hidden beauty found in the unexpected places and fleeting moments of everyday life. I continue to be intrigued by the urban landscapes of inner cities – their active streets, time worn buildings and multiple layers of decay, renewal and adaptation – that proudly display the effects of age and use, which I see as testaments to strength, character and authenticity in contrast with modern society’s demand for newness, imitation, disposability and easy duplication.  My work is influenced by the American realists such as Sargent, Hopper and the three generations of Wyeths along with California painters Thiebaud and Diebenkorn.”
