LPAPA’s 20th Invitational Book

August 1, 2019 by Toni Kellenberg

LPAPA 20th Anniversary Book

In 1999, a tradition was started, The Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational. Each year the best of the best plein air artists are invited to come to Laguna Beach to paint and celebrate the legacy of the early plein air artists who established Laguna Beach as an Artists’ Colony, who founded the original Laguna Beach Art Association, and opened the first Laguna Art Gallery, in 1918.

The Mission of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA) is dedicated to preserving and promoting Laguna’s artistic legacy and the plein air painting tradition for today’s artists and future generations of outdoor painters.

In 2018 we celebrated our 20th anniversary of the Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational with the publication of our first hardbound book. This special 20th anniversary book, authored by Mr. Jean Stern, the leading authority on plein air art and Emeritus Director of The Irvine Museum, is a recording of the Invitational history and showcases the top award-winning artists who have helped LPAPA further its mission to promote and preserve the Laguna plein air painting tradition.

“I use my plein air work as a way to “capture a feeling.” I use my camera to record a moment. Back in my studio I like to combine these into large scale paintings of those things I wish I could keep forever… old signs, decaying building, old cars, trucks and tractors, and beautiful rural landscapes. My paintings are my memories, and accordingly, some of my paintings take the angle of a child’s viewpoint; lower to the ground.”  — David Boyd Jr.

“I work to create each painting in such a way that when viewed from a close distance, they are textural and almost abstract in nature. When seen from a further distance, the impressionist-style brushstrokes, lines, shapes and colors magically come together in perfect rhythm to reveal a particular  subject.” — Kristen Olson Stone

“A hiker moves through the landscape. An artist allows the landscape to move through them. From the fixed point of an easel, I become a crude conduit, through which the story of a moment is told. Sometimes I don’t listen very well, or I just don’t get it. Occasionally, I’m able to use pastels or paint to translate that feeling of deep longing into something worth sharing. Yes, I hope to sell paintings, to sell instructional DVD’s and to convince you to sign up for workshops. But, at the end of the day, I really want to convince you that there is more in a reflection than meets the the eye. Stay a little longer. Look again.”

“As a landscape architect, I have a great appreciation for natural environments, designed spaces and special places that people enjoy being in.  As a native Californian, I am especially drawn to the diverse natural and manmade environments of this state.  I spent some concentrated time learning the techniques of plein air painting in 1999 and 2000 while I was living in Rhode Island, but it wasn’t until I returned to California in 2001 that my desire and motivation to paint landscapes became supremely energized.   The foothills, coastal landscapes and unique neighborhoods of California feed my soul.  Through painting I celebrate the uniqueness of my home state and the joy of returning home..”  — Pamela Panattoni
