Deborah Newman has a BFA in Graphic Design from Art Center College of Design and a BA from the University of Oregon. She worked as an art director for Saatchi and Saatchi in San Francisco before taking up painting as a full-time commitment in 1998. She has studied with Scott Christensen, Kevin Macpherson, Matt Smith, and Randy Sexton, and participated in many plein air painting events. A member of the Salmagundi Club, Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, Oil Painters of America, and American Impressionist Society, Deborah’s work can be seen in Fine Art Connoisseur and Southwest Art.

LPAPA’s Waterworks Juried Show accepts artwork created both in plein air and in studio, however, the top “Best Plein Air” award is only eligible for a work created in plein air, and in addition to the cash award, the award-winning artist receives a coveted “golden ticket” to participate in LPAPA’s 23rd Annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational, October 2 – 10, 2021.

This annual watercolor show is made possible with the support of the Joe Hanks Van Cleave Foundation for the Arts and honors the family’s matriarch Joe Hanks Van Cleave (1920-2003) who preferred painting with transparent watercolor and often exhibited as a member of the Laguna Beach Art Association (1957-1969) in their gallery (now the Laguna Art Museum), and her big one-woman show in July 1962. 

To address the challenges imposed by the pandemic, LPAPA will continue to present its annual juried art shows online and in an auction format until it is feasible to return to physical exhibits and receptions at its “LPAPA in Residence” Gallery home at the Forest & Ocean Gallery in the heart of Laguna’s art district.

Proceeds from the sale of artwork benefits the participating artists and nonprofit LPAPA, and helps sustain LPAPA’s Mission and LPAPA in Residence Gallery. LPAPA’s mission is dedicated to painting the landscape, preserving Laguna’s artistic legacy and promoting the plein air painting tradition. LPAPA strives to enhance the livelihood of its artist members and inspire the next generation of plein air painters!

Something about the paintings of Camille Przewodek stops you, then brings a smile to your face.  Maybe it is the vitality of the colors, or the feeling of intrigue one gets from the houses; windows and doorways beckon us to enter, while retaining dark secrets about what is inside.

Camille doesn’t quibble about the paintings being happy.  She won’t even set up her easel unless there is something about the scene that grabs her heart and gnaws at her aesthetic adoration of light on color.  “If I don’t care, I don’t paint,” she says bluntly.
