Durre grew up in a family that loved to draw and color. She took up formal art classes in college and earned a Masters degree from Punjab university where she taught for the next seven years and later three at a girls college. It was during her teaching years that she explored herself as an artist with better understanding of seeing and omitting. For next 30 years of painting her colors and strokes evolved and adapted through her exposure to different art and places. Durre feels that now she only takes charge of selecting a subject and her painting leads her through the process.

When in 4th grade in Laramie, Wyoming, Mary completed her first plein air landscape painting as part of a school project and the experience was thrilling and memorable, portending of a future to come, far more wonderful than she could have imagined at the time. Despite a desire to be an artist, continuing to paint and taking a few classes in high school, yet not entirely sure how real artists actually made a living, she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Washington in Seattle and got as close to art as possible, working as a cartographer for a few years.

The drive to paint was unrelenting, though, and Mary was finally able to pursue her first love of representational painting by taking classes, reading (and re-reading) every book on fine art she could get her hands on, and drawing from the live model, which eventually led to completing many private commission paintings in watercolor and oil, and public commission paintings in acrylic as an Artist in Residence for the Stillwater School District in Minnesota, and in casein for large theater backdrop for the St. Croix Ballet Academy, Stillwater, MN. In the following years, she continued to refine her skills, delving into the medium of pastel and painting directly from life. She also studied with several renowned artists and at the Gage Academy of Art in Seattle, WA and at the Watts Atelier in Encinitas, CA.

She has received numerous awards for her paintings, has been featured in The Pastel Journal and in several French art publications under the Pratique des Arts name. She is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America, the Northwest Pastel Society, the Pastel Society of the West Coast, and a Master’s Circle Member of the International Association of Pastel Societies. She is also an Artist member of the California Art Club.

“Plein air painting is one of the most frustrating of artistic endeavors. Trudging off into the hills looking for a place to paint is exhilarating. Finding a perfect spot, setting up, painting for several uninterrupted (hopefully) hours and producing a painting can be an unbelievable high. The painting doesn’t even have to be good! Each of these excursions is an invaluable learning experience. Sure, I take photos along the way for use later in studio paintings BUT those small paintings produced en plein air are the ones of which I’m most proud. After all, I’ve had to hike in lugging an 18 lb. backpack with all my supplies, endured the heat and/or cold, fought off annoying bugs, been polite (usually) to passersby, set up all my paraphernalia and stood for hours working in the sun. It’s an accomplishment just to survive the day.” — Jacquelyn Blue
