Calvin will begin with an outdoor demonstration on day one and will spend one on one time with each student the rest of the day. Plein air painting is a foundational part of training the eye to better understand the concepts of composition, design, and color harmony.

Class meets from 10am-5pm each day, with a 1-hour lunch break. All skill levels welcome, beginner to professional.

This workshop’s painting on location lessons include :

  • How to better see warm and cool color in landscapes.
  • How to command hardness and softness of the edges to create space in painting.
  • How to simplify the subject matter through the use of basic design, value, color,  and drawing skills.
  • How to consider the reasons for different paint surface textures, and brushstroke direction over the forms.
  • How to get the best possible result in a short time.

Students must provide their own art supplies, meals, accommodations, parking fees, and transportation to and from painting sites. Maximum of 15 students, minimum of 8.
