” I feel deeply grateful to spend my life observing and painting the world around me. Working in oil, both en plein air and in the studio, I am continually inspired by the beauty and atmosphere of coastal and maritime life—the shifting light across the water, weathered harbors, working boats, and fleeting moments that can never be repeated in quite the same way again. I believe plein air painters serve as quiet conservationists and historians of place. Through our work, we document landscapes, coastlines, harbors, and traditions that are constantly changing or disappearing altogether. A painting becomes more than a record of a location—it preserves a moment in time, an atmosphere, and a way of life that may not exist in the future.”

“Plein air painting is a dialog I have with nature, which is full of light, colors and shapes filled with aromas, sounds and delightful surprises that moves me to reveal its abundant gifts, not by copying, but by meditative focus to bring forth its spirit.

“Mark’s work portrays urban and natural beauty. Preferred subjects include landscapes, coastlines, highways, roads, alleys, and industrial areas. Inspired by compelling compositions, dynamic light, strong contrast, and carefully choreographed color harmonies, Mark loves to paint on location and he employs loose, spontaneous brushwork in a manner described as abstract realism. “

“Mike uses bold bright colors, strong strokes, shades and shadows and varied textures to create an image that is similar to the actual image, but with more interest, color and textures.”

“I like to think that I chose to work in watercolor but in many ways watercolor chose me. We have an agreement, it goes where it wants with little direction from me. Watercolor is not a medium that is “pushed” around. Instead, you have to adapt and abandon rigidity as it flows and runs across the paper creating hypnotic washes. I strive to bring a sense of space and atmosphere, with a cinematic elegance and quiet sophistication to my work. Creating a poetic narrative, each piece telling a unique story.”
