“I like to think that I chose to work in watercolor but in many ways watercolor chose me. We have an agreement, it goes where it wants with little direction from me. Watercolor is not a medium that is “pushed” around. Instead, you have to adapt and abandon rigidity as it flows and runs across the paper creating hypnotic washes. I strive to bring a sense of space and atmosphere, with a cinematic elegance and quiet sophistication to my work. Creating a poetic narrative, each piece telling a unique story.”

Terry Miura
Fair Oaks, California

“Miura’s evocative tonalist landscapes explore the relationship between memory, emotions, and identity. “Although they’re still very much representational,” says Miura, “they’re not about specific locations. Well, actually they are, but the locations are found in my and the viewer’s memories. Not out there in the physical world .”

“Painting is a calling for me. It is a longing for those moments when the poetry happens when a sunbeam caresses a snowbank, peeks into a glade, or spills diamonds across the sea. I’m compelled by something deep in me to seize that energy and to express it as paint on canvas…my reward is to have the viewer linger, to understand, to share as the canvas evokes and conveys a glimmer of that sublime natural beauty all around us.”

“Most of my inspiration stems from how landscapes integrate with urban settings. I find great interest in how sturdy man-made structures coexist with organic forms of nature. Alleys, freeway bridges, on-and-off ramps, shabby buildings, construction sites and subjects that don’t get a lot of attention are of particular interest to me.”

” I am awestruck by the beauty and diversity of the Northwest. I see the fingerprints of a creative God all around me — from the last glow of golden light on a mountain to the sparkle of a meandering meadow stream. This inspires me to try to capture an essence of a scene or moment in time, and share that with others.”
