Camille Przewodek: Capture the Effect of Light with Color Recording

March 7, 2021 by Toni Kellenberg

LPAPA Mentor Camille Przewodek

LPAPA Mentor Camille Przewodek

In this Mentor Session recording, LPAPA Signature Artist Camille Przewodek shares painting principles and critiques work previously submitted by registered artists before the original broadcast, to help you better Capture the Effect of Light with Color!

“Make a lot of starts—wait till later to try to finish things.”—Charles Hawthorne

Camille shares: The “start”, or first statement you make, is the foundation of your painting. If there is one overriding goal I have in teaching my classes & workshops, it is to convey to my students the fundamental importance of making a strong and accurate statement of hue relationships at the very beginning. Value and saturation are also important, but, as colorists, our mission is to see and capture the “light key,” and that’s most effectively accomplished by beginning to work immediately with the color relationships. This direct color approach is indicative of the Cape School method where we are taught that everything we see is seen in a particular light and that we can greatly expand the gamut with which we can express the light falling on our subject by learning to see and accurately express hue differences at the outset. To emphasize this, we’ve come up with a memorable motto, “Hues on first!”

Once the student has established a strong start, which Hawthorne considers the more important phase, the student can then go on and, taking care to not lose the strength of this first statement, make additional color changes and variations to further develop the painting. But always remember, a strong start is crucial. As my husband says, “If you don’t get a good start, you’re finished.”

As an example, here is a recording of Camille’s interview with Eric Rhoads, and the demo of her ONLINE color study program:

Rick J. Delanty: Composition That Works Recording

February 27, 2021 by Toni Kellenberg

Rick Delanty

Composition with Rick Delanty

In this Mentor Session recording, LPAPA Signature Artist Rick J. Delanty shares lessons and critique works submitted to help you in creating a Composition that Works!

Although there might not be any “rules” to painting, there are principles that guide an artist into efficient and effective designs. Many of those principles have to do with composition, specifically the well-chosen arrangement of lines, shapes, spaces, value, and color into a design that is beautiful and powerful. When a design says exactly what you want it to say—it works!

Rick’s recorded session includes comprehensive critiques of work that was submitted by artists before the live-stream broadcast.
