Don’s maritime experience came about as a crew-member aboard many traditional sailing vessels including schooners and square-riggers. His professional career began as an illustrator and expanded into the field of fine art. His illustrations can be found on many book covers and in national publications such as Reader’s Digest, Sail Magazine, Field & Stream, Sports Afield, Yankee, and National Geographic.

” A hiker moves through the landscape. An artist allows the landscape to move through them. From the fixed point of an easel, I become a crude conduit, though which the story of a moment is told. Sometimes I don’t listen very well, or I just don’t get it. Occasionally, I’m able to use pastels or paint to translate that feeling of deep longing into something worth sharing.”

“I am a contemporary representational painter, working primarily outdoors. I paint what catches my interest in the moment. This could be almost anything; an orchestration of shapes, color contrast, light and shadow patterns, a mood or atmosphere, a subject I have never tried, or a subject I enjoy, etc. I am drawn to paint places and things that say something about the day and time I live in now.”
