April’s plein air advice, adventures & art: Plein Talk Q&As with April Raber & Artwork Showcase
From her earliest years, April’s vision was to paint. She kept this vision throughout her college years, and began showing in galleries shortly after graduating. Except for six years as the designer and art director for a national magazine, April’s full-time career has been creating fine art.
“Although my paintings are representational, I am defiantly not trying to emulate photo-realism. Rather, my mind and my eye work together to form a double vision. This brings to the canvas impressions of both the seen and the unseen. Without both the scene does not come alive. For me, art is about seeing not only the obvious image, but interpreting its essence.” — April Raber

We were treated to a special LPAPA Plein Talk and Painting Demo with Signature Artist John P. Lasater IV presented via Facebook Live-Video-Streaming from Arkansas on April 21st, 2017.
Those of us who were able to tune in were enlightened as John demonstrated his painting process and engaged in lively conversation regarding the world of plein air art and painting techniques. John painted and answered questions via Facebook video comments!
This is a past “live” event and no longer available; you can follow John on Facebook through this link: John Porter Lasater IV
LPAPA Signature Artist & Founding Member John Cosby
of San Clemente, California
LPAPA’s April 2017 featured Signature Artist Member of the Month.
Cosby started traveling at an early age. At 18 he was chosen as an advance man for the Executive Branch of the US Government, served under two Presidents and traveled the world. He met many interesting people and saw many things but what most interested him were the great works of art he encountered. “They haunted me and helped set the course for my career as a painter”. After leaving the White House, Cosby rebuilt an old classic sailing sloop designed by Nathaniel Herrishoff. With a friend (who had dreams of being a writer) set sail up and down the eastern seaboard in the inland waterway for 3 years. Thus he began his art career.
“Doing drawings of anything that moved me, things began to sell and my course was set,” said Cosby.
Upon his return to the California, Cosby began painting the sea and landscape of coastal California. With a strong gallery response, his success as a painter quickly followed.
John was one of the five original Founding Members of LPAPA, who came together with Founder Saim Caglayan along with Ken Auster, Jacobus Baas and Cynthia Britain, to create the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.
