Toni Danchik always has her eyes open and camera ready to capture special moments when they occur. It could be a certain lighting on a child at play, someone walking their dogs, the interaction between seagulls on the beach, some fruit lying on a counter top or simply a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Part of what attracts her is the “story” behind every image.

Toni says she looks for good design, the interaction of shapes, colors, and the effects of light on a subject. She tries to stay true to her first feeling and heartfelt response to her subject and she is always mindful of how she applies paint to the canvas by using expressive brush stokes to keep her work rich and engaging.

“Even though I paint a lot of studies on location, my landscapes are actually less about describing a specific place than they are about the feelings evoked.  In an impressionistic, tonal style I hope to convey the emotional connection that I had with each scene.  Moving cross-Atlantic three times in my early years, I spent much of my life with an underlying sense of homesickness.  This yearning propelled me to create a sense of ‘home’ within my landscapes.  My greatest hope is that my work gives its viewers this same sense of comfort and connectedness; a gentle place to rest.” — Jane Hunt

Plein Talk with Stewart White

Stewart White is a watercolorist from Baltimore, Maryland. He is one of the rare plein air painters using the medium of watercolor. His background in architectural illustration adds to his skill set and his paintings reflect his knowledge of good design. Stewart’s paintings have the pleasing combination of good structure with a painterly style. He is a transparent watercolorist in the purest tradition of watercolor painters. Where as watercolor expresses its nature as fluid, oil paint is stiff and seems to want to be expressed in a thick and buttery way.

Plein Talk with Lori Putnam

“As a Contemporary American Impressionist, what interests me is rarely any specific subject unto itself. Instead I see color harmony, rhythms, patterns, and strong shapes. Weaving in and out, the world at 60 mph, life at a glance, this is how I paint. It is fascinating seeing this way. My art engages its viewers, like passers by who have to stop and move in more closely. The work invites them to find their own answers, like following clues to a mystery, and they can become an artist themselves, even if only for a brief time.” — Lori Putnam
