“I do not consider myself a watercolorist, but rather an artist who expresses his art through this most challenging of mediums. I paint in watercolor because of its fluidity which expresses so well the flowing forces that I see and feel in Nature. My technique of fluid overlapping brushstrokes has grown from the study of 19th Century British and American masters of the medium and a close observation of the insights of other painters with a special appreciation for the California Impressionists as a painter is to capture the ever-transient light and its colors within a composition of balance and harmony.” –Larry Cannon

The week of October 2 – 10, 2021, 35 plein air masters came from around the country to participate in the 23rd annual Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational presented by the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA). They brought not only their skills and talent but their artistic secrets and inspirations, their backstories and philosophies, even their vulnerabilities and moments of pride.

2021 Laguna Plein Air Invitational

The Laguna Plein Air Painters Association (LPAPA) and our Laguna Beach Community are excited to return to celebrating the Plein Air Legacy in person!  LPAPA faced the obstacles of 2020 and not only survived but thrived with the support of our community and artists.

The 2021 Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting Invitational features 35 of the nation’s top award-winning plein air artists who are dedicated to painting the landscape and preserving Laguna’s plein air painting legacy and tradition. During the 9-day plein air art festival, October 2nd – 10th, the invited artists will paint in and around Laguna Beach and the surrounding communities, coastlines, and canyons. There will be opportunities to purchase original paintings created during the week, meet and greet with the artists, and learn about Laguna’s plein air heritage. The artists will submit what they consider to be their best paintings at the end of the week for the awards judging and the Collectors Gala exhibition to be hosted at the Laguna Festival of Arts grounds on Saturday, October 9, 2021.

Here’s our 2021 roster of invited artists….
