May 2022 Featured Artist: Victoria Huff

May 1, 2022 by Bonnie Langner

LPAPA Featured Artist Victoria Huff at her easel

May 2022 Featured Artist Member of the Month: Victoria Huff of El Segundo, California

Born and raised in Southern California Victoria fell in love with the outdoors. Memories of hiking, camping in the mountains, deserts and beaches of California remain imprinted in her mind. She found her passion while earning her Bachelors of Fine Art in Illustration at California State University, Long Beach. While attending art school Victoria developed a broad visual vocabulary and was exposed to a wide spectrum of ideas. It was not until she applied these fundamentals with the adventure of the outdoors that she truly learned to paint. Her paintings depict the places she loves and are deeply connected to her experiences there. Many pieces are created outdoors on location or studies are brought back to the studio for her to expand on. She finds herself captivated by the ebb and flow of the ocean, the stretching shadows and the golden sunlight that California has to offer. Victoria currently lives in Los Angeles as a full-time artist and continues developing her work.

Plein Talk with Kathleen Dunphy: June 4, 2022

Laguna Plein Air Painting with Kathleen Dunphy“Outside Insights” Plein Talk with Kathleen Dunphy
Saturday, June 4, 2022, 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm
.
LPAPA is proud to present a special “Artist in Residence” Plein Talk and Exhibition at the LPAPA Gallery by LPAPA Signature Artist Kathleen Dunphy on Saturday June 4th, 6-8pm. “Outside Insights” will include major studio paintings and the field work that inspired them (Exhibition Dates: June 2 – July 4, 2022).
.
Creating a major studio painting takes more than just the desire to paint. Hours of research to find an inspiring location, time in the field to paint plein air studies, weeks of design work while the idea percolates, and days (or sometimes even months) of painting all go into creating the final product.
.
But so often in the art world, we only see the end result of an artist’s creation: the finished painting hanging in a beautiful frame. What goes on behind the scenes to make that painting happen? How does the artist get the idea? What happens during the planning process? Where does she even start?
.

In this special Plein Talk presentation, Kathleen Dunphy will take you behind the scenes to share her painting process from inception to final painting. Her “Outside Insights” LPAPA Gallery exhibition will include 4-5 larger studio paintings, as well as the field work that inspired and informed the paintings: plein air studies, sketchbook drawings, notes from her journal, and photographs of her time in the field. Learn how one artist approaches her work in this informative and engaging talk and exhibit.

April 2022 Featured Signature Artist: Jeff Horn

Jeff Horn

April 2022 Signature Artist Member of the Month:  Jeff Horn of Costa Mesa, California

“I prefer to paint directly from nature and I love being outdoors where I can see, hear, feel, smell and even taste the scene around me. For me, the painting is a translation of nature and my experience of it. If I am successful, I take the viewer with me to feel the moment.  I believe good painting is not a slavish copy of visual details, but an emotional response to a moment in nature.”  –Jeff Horn
