Laguna Art Museum | Thursday, April 16th | 6:00 PM 

Join us for an illuminating evening at the Laguna Art Museum as we bridge a century of coastal painting. Held in conjunction with LPAPA’s juried exhibition, and the museum’s exhibition, this lively panel discussion honors the enduring legacy of Frank Cuprien, the “Dean of Laguna Coast Painters.”

Our panelists—including Museum Director Julie Perlin Lee and Co-Curator Dr. Kelly Tucker, and LPAPA’s award-winning contemporary artists Tonya Zenin, Renae Wang, and Jeff Sewell —will explore:

  • The Love of the Sea: What makes Cuprien’s luminous handling of light and atmosphere so technically profound?

  • A Century of Connection: How has the Southern California coast changed for the artist, and where does Cuprien’s influence remain?

  • The Contemporary Response: A look at how today’s plein air masters interpret the same shores that defined the Laguna Art Colony a hundred years ago.

Expect an engaging dialogue on the art of “looking closely,” the evolution of the plein air movement, and the unique spirit of place that defines Laguna Beach. Be sure to allow time to visit the museum’s exhibition “Frank Cuprien: For the Love of the Sea” before or after the talk!

David Allen, LPAPA Gallery Featured Artist of the Month for March 2026

March 2026 Featured Artist : David Allen of Orange, California

Born and raised in Lincoln, Nebraska, David found positive influences early in life. Encouragement from teachers, colleagues, and family inspired him to pursue his passion for art.After moving to Southern California, he had the opportunity to work for a graphics and printing company, which rekindled his strong interest in the arts. David began studying plein air painting through workshops with Debra Huse, Kenn Backhaus, Jim Woodark, and other accomplished landscape painters.He later founded his own company, Postcards & Cards Unlimited, featuring his original photography. His entrepreneurial pursuits renewed both his interest and his desire to return to painting. David enjoys volunteering with art organizations, galleries, and special events. He is currently the Gallery Manager at the LPAPA Gallery.

The LPAPA Gallery is pleased to present a special “Plein Talk” Painting Demonstration & Q&As with LPAPA Signature Artist Aimee Erickson at the LPAPA Gallery Sunday July 20th, 5:30-7:30 pm (registered workshop students will have early entry to meet at 5:00 pm with registration included in the workshop fee). Light refreshments will be provided.

In addition, the LPAPA Gallery is featuring a selection of paintings by Aimee Erickson on exhibit through August 4th.

The LPAPA Gallery is located on Gallery Row at 414 North Coast Highway, Laguna Beach, between Jasmine and Myrtle streets. Gallery hours are 11am to 5pm, Thursday through Monday, and by appointment. The gallery is open with extended hours to 9pm the First Thursday of each month for Art Walk.
