Dan McCaw

Torrance, California

Dan McCaw’s work is a bridge between his traditional background and the contemporary influences that continually impact his art. Strong design is the foundation that his work is based upon but curiosity is the fuel that drives his creativity. “Art flourishes in change, it expands when its limits are limitless. The artist must remain open to its possibilities and eliminate the dispassionate. The dignity of art is not in its constants but in the liberation of its possibilities.“

Influenced by the classical masters at an early age Dan, over the years, has seen his appreciation and seduction for many different genres of art. “Anything that make me think, makes me engage and broadens my perceptions is of great importance and interest to me.” Dan tries to make his paintings somewhat ambiguous so that the viewer, if they wish, can participate and walk through a door that he just holds open, what you find inside becomes your own. If he defines or explains everything Dan feels that he robs you of your own experience.

Dan was raised in a small colorful tough Irish mining town of Butte, Montana, whose people were far richer in character than the precious copper that was mined day and night. It was in these formative years much of his own character was molded and from which he constantly draws upon.

Dan began his formal art training at the San Francisco Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California when he was twenty, then on to the Art Center College Of Design, in Pasadena, California and the Bongart School of Art in Santa Monica, California. He was on the faculty of the Art Center College of Design for over fifteen years, has had over forty Solo Exhibitions, numerous national and international articles, written one book, and in 2007 was given an Honorary Doctorate degree by the San Francisco Academy of Art University.

Dan is an invited master artist in the LPAPA Gallery’s special 2025 exhibition “LPAPA Beyond the Landscape” featuring works by Jove Wang, Scott Burdick and Dan McCaw.

Scott Burdick was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1967 where his mother and father early on encouraged his interest in Art. “I spent a lot of time in hospitals as a child and remember my mother showing me how to transform simple shapes like circles, triangles, and squares into objects like planes, helicopters, and fish. It seemed such a magical thing and made spending so much time in casts and on crutches much more bearable.”

In high school, Scott began taking life-drawing classes at the American Academy of Art under the legendary Bill Parks. “Though I’d always loved drawing, it was Mr. Parks who filled me with the enthusiasm and discipline necessary to improve my skills. His love of painting and creative expression infected us all.” After finishing the Academy, Scott continued his study informally with Richard Schmid at the Palette and Chisel Art Club, where he met his wife, painter Susan Lyon. “It’s a wonderful thing being able to paint together all the time and grow as artists together,” Scott says.

Scott has received numerous awards for his work including the 1996 Oil Painters of America Award of Excellence, the 1999 and 2000 Laguna Plein Air Painting Invitational Artist Choice Awards, 2002 Laguna Plein Air Invitational Honorable Mention Award, 2003 Laguna Plein Air Invitational Best in Show Artists’ Choice Award, the 2007 Western Rendezvous of Art Artist Choice Award, 2010 Portrait Society of America First Place Award, and 2015 Prix de West Show Buyers Choice Award.  Scott participated as an invited plein air painter in the prestigious Laguna Beach Plein Air Painting invitational five times (1999, 2000, 2002, 2003, and 2006). Scott is an invited master artist in the LPAPA Gallery’s 2025 special exhibition “LPAPA Beyond the Landscape” featuring works by Jove Wang, Scott Burdick and Dan McCaw.

LPAPA Signature Artist Allen Brockbank
Centerville, Utah

Allen’s development as an artist was defined early in his home by his parents.  His father was an outdoor enthusiast who led Allen on mountain climbs and backpacking trips across the American west.  His mother was an accomplished watercolor artist with a love of the landscape who shared her experience with her young son.  Allen went on to earn a fine arts degree from Brigham Young University where he met his wife Janice.  They settled in Centerville, Utah where Allen began his career in commercial art and computer game design.  Over the next twenty years, Allen refined his artistic skills in the digital world developing video games with fine companies like Disney, Microsoft, and Take Two.  It was during this time that Allen discovered the joys and challenges of landscape painting right in his backyard.  Utah is a painter’s paradise and a “university” for teaching the plein air artist.  He believes that painting on location and in the studio are complimentary pursuits, one building upon the other.

“…For me, watercolor is a passion and a challenge with its subtle and gentle nature, innate wildness and unpredictability… Watercolor can easily express the impression of the moment. Quick and concise, but sufficient. I can compare it to haiku poetry – it says everything without burdening with specifics…”
